"This school is accredited by Association Montessori International (AMI)-the most esteemed affiliation in the Montessori community. MMS is one of the only 9 public schools in the country to achieve this accreditation, and is the only AMI accredited public Montessori school in New England."

Dr. Antonio Napoleone, Principal

Welcome to the CREC Montessori Magnet School (MMS), the first public Montessori school in Connecticut!

We are an inter-district Magnet School, operated and managed by the Capitol Region Education Council. Celebrating its twenty-sixth year, MMS serves 350 students in PreK-Grade 6. Students come from 38 towns in the Greater Hartford area and the school is located on The Learning Corridor in Hartford, a community campus that includes: Trinity College, four inter-district magnet schools, a Girls' and Boys' club, the Institute of Living, and the Connecticut Children's Medical Center.

This school is accredited by Association Montessori International (AMI) the most esteemed affiliation in the Montessori community. MMS is one of only 9 public schools in the country to achieve this accreditation, and is the only AMI accredited public Montessori school in New England.

MMS was created to reduce the racial, ethnic, and socio-economic isolation of the Greater Hartford area. The school's mission is to ensure that all students meet high standards and develop to their full potential in traditional and expanded academic areas as defined by Dr. Maria Montessori's philosophy of education.

Dr. Montessori believed that children pass through “Sensitive Periods” of learning and developing. Consequently, materials (in literacy, math, science, geography, cultural studies and the arts), instruction and the classroom environments must support and provide for these periods.

Children remain within a classroom setting with the same teacher for an entire developmental cycle, generally lasting three years. Social and academic curricula are provided with the intention of preparing children for the world through an inquiry-based model. Once children learn to read, they read to learn, and immerse themselves in extensive interdisciplinary research projects. Our intense focus on community and parent involvement enriches each child's classroom experience.

Our talented staff is a group of dedicated professionals, who are both Connecticut certified and Montessori trained. Each classroom teacher attends a rigorous, three-year training sponsored by the Montessori Training Center of New England and Association Montessori Internationale.
